PAVING THE WAY TO WARDS NET ZERO

EMISSIONS BY 2040

We believe companies must play a pivotal role in addressing global environmental issues and are working to do our part through various initiatives.

We continuously assess and aim to lower our carbon footprint. We are also planning to complete a full greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions audit in 2022, as we ready ourselves to make a global commitment to the Paris Agreement’s 1.5-degree pledge.

REDUCING OUR DIRECT CARBON EMISSIONS

We’re working on reducing the environmental impact of our transportation activities, as fuel consumption by our vehicles is a significant direct GHG emission source from our operations. Currently, all new vehicles we acquire adhere to EURO III standard at a minimum, and EURO IV wherever possible. Our objective is to eventually replace all retiring vehicles with EV alternatives.

Our FarEye tool is helping us optimize transportation routes, so we reduce to a minimum the number of miles that our vehicles travel, their corresponding fuel consumption, and GHG emissions.

We’ve also started collecting data on refrigerant leakage from cooling equipment so that these emissions can be quantified and mitigated as necessary.

INTEGRATING SOLAR AND ENERGY EFFICIENCY INTERVENTIONS

Integration of renewable energy to replace fossil fuel based grid electricity is one of the most important intervention towards our shift to net-zero. Our shift to largescale uptake of renewable energy began in 2018 with the award of roof top solar contract for our Head Office and Main Warehouse in UAE. Since then, we have installed roof top solar panels at our second Head Office and Dubai Investments Park (DIP) Warehouse site.

We now meet 34% of our electricity demand at these four buildings through solar energy. Thereby significantly reducing our Scope 2 emissions. To date, we have installed 3,549 KWp of solar capacity and reduced 2,697 tons of CO2-eq emissions. Looking to the future, we are in process of undertaking feasibility study for installation of solar panels at our warehouses in KSA.

REDUCING OUR INDIRECT  EMISSIONS

As an employer of thousands and client to hundreds of suppliers, we must tackle indirect emissions resulting from our operations. In 2021, we added air travel related greenhouse gas emissions to our comprehensive tally. We are also aiming to include emissions from export and import activities going forward.

Emissions stemming from employee commuting are being addressed by promoting the use of electric vehicles, installing EV chargers at our premises, and making available vans and buses for our employees to help lower their fuel consumption.

We estimate our GHG emissions in accordance with GHG Protocol corporate standard.
Summary of 2021 emissions is depicted in the chart below:
